Suspects arrested after robbery, freeway closure

DURHAM

The robbery happened just before 10 p.m. at the Triangle Mini Mart on Fayetteville Street near Cornwallis Road. Police were told two men wearing blue and white bandanas over their faces robbed the convenience store at gunpoint and fled in silver Mitsubishi.

A short time later, officers spotted a Mitsubishi matching the description of the one used in the robbery on South Alston Avenue.

Authorities stopped the car and arrested two of the suspects in the vehicle, but two others managed to flee the scene on foot.

Officials had to shut down the Durham Freeway between Fayetteville Street and the R. Kelly Bryant Jr. pedestrian bridge near South Alston Avenue for about 30 minutes while they looked for the pair.

They were soon found at another nearby convenience store and taken into custody.

All four suspects were taken to police headquarters for questioning.

Authorities later said that during questioning, they determined that the four men were not involved in the Triangle Mini Mart robbery. However, three of the men were arrested on unrelated charges.

Kyle Maurice Fisher, 25, was arrested on outstanding warrants for driving with a revoked license and failure to report an accident.

De-shan Lee Ray, 21, was arrested on an outstanding order for a misdemeanor probation violation and John Erston Sykes, 28, was arrested for felony possession of cocaine and possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver marijuana.

Meanwhile, authorities are still searching for the two suspects involved in the Triangle Mini Mart armed robbery.

The first suspect was described as standing between 6 feet and 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighed between 170 and 180 pounds. He was wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt.

The second suspect was described as standing between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 11 inches tall and was wearing a gray and black hooded sweatshirt.
