Wake County man to receive Presidential honor

It's the second highest award anyone can get -- the Presidential Citizens Medal. Later this week, President Obama is awarding it to a Wake County man who dedicated his life to helping veterans.

Mike Dorman had a career in the Coast Guard and also as a contractor, but he felt the need to do more and now the president will recognize him for it.

Dorman said this is the moment that makes it all worthwhile -- helping the men and women who have served our country, and the men and women who now need our help.

"I know what I can and can't do anymore," said Army veteran Dick Pinney.

For Pinney, a simple task like walking or rather wheeling to his front door was nearly impossible and painful just a week ago.

"I'll be going down a set of stairs, that's my biggest problem going down a set of stairs," said Pinney.

But what a difference a day can make. In just one day,  a team of volunteers led by Dorman from Military Missions in Action built a ramp for Pinney for free.

"Everything he's done for me, he's been like a guardian angel," said Pinney.

Dorman is a guardian angel who has devoted his life to helping others and other veterans in any way he can.

"Those who have sacrificed body and limb to fight for our freedom, they deserve a quality of life at home," said Dorman.

Dorman's selflessness had garnered him the Presidential Citizen's Medal, which will be awarded to him this week by the president.

Dorman is just humbled by his life work.

"It warms your heart to see people giving back but that's what it's about, bringing communities together to help out our men and women who have served," he said.

Dorman has also been featured on ABC11's Armed Forces Salute for his good work.

He will be honored this Friday by the president and will also meet with Sen. John McCain.
