Student hit by car at school bus stop

An 8th grader trying to board his school bus Thursday morning was struck by a passing car in Nash County, according to officials.

It happened around 6:20 a.m. on Hwy 58 near Simmons Road in Castalia, NC.

Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools officials said bus 319 was stopped with warning lights on and the stop arm extended, when a driver sped past and hit 13-year-old Jesus Ortis-Licea as he was about to board the bus.

The Red Oak Middle Schooler was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

The driver, Nicholas Benitez, was arrest by the state Highway Patrol after the accident. He is facing failure to stop for a stopped school bus and other charges.
