A registered sex offender from Chatham County has been arrested and accused of assaulting a 13-year-old girl.

Thirty-year-old Phillip Broyal, of 327 Vander Oldham Rd. in Bear Creek, was arrested on Monday after a month-long investigation.

Detectives said the sexual assault occurred around Christmas with a child who is a relative of Broyal. The child reported in February that she was assaulted while she was visiting his home.

Broyal was charged with felony indecent liberties with child, felony statutory rape/sex offense, felony child abuse/serious bodily injury. He was jailed under a $500,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in Chatham County District Court in Pittsboro on Monday.
