Two injured in Fayetteville shooting, man charged

FAYETTEVILLE

Around 10 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said they received a call about a possible robbery at 1850 Owen Drive near Boone Trail Extension.

When officers arrived, they learned two people had been shot and were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. They also learned the alleged gunman fled the scene in a dark-colored vehicle.

Police spotted the vehicle about two miles from the scene near Robeson Street and Weiss Avenue a short time later.

Two people inside the car were taken into custody.

Authorities charged 32-year-old Gary Hammonds with two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon inflicting serious injury and three counts of shooting into an occupied vehicle in connection with the incident.

Thirty-seven-year-old Kevin Rodriguez, who was in the car with Hammonds, was arrested on an unrelated order for arrest out of Moore County.

Authorities said a rifle and handgun were also found in the car with the men.

During the course of their investigation, authorities said the shooting stemmed from a drug deal between the suspects and the victims.

Police said during the incident, an altercation occurred and shots were fired.

The two people injured in the shooting, 41-year-old David Odom Jr. and 23-year-old Carlos Monroe, are currently recovering from their injuries at the hospital.

A third person, 19-year-old Xavier Warren, who was with the men was not injured, was later charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resist delay and obstruct.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing at this time.
