Police say teen started Cary culvert fire

CARY, N.C.

Investigators said Tristan Zammit of Brownfield drive set a blaze that spread to flammable tar covering the metal pipe. The heat from the fire collapsed the culvert - meaning it will have to be replaced.

Zammit was charged with misdemeanor intentional setting fire to grass, brush lands, or woodlands - punishable by up to 60 days in jail and $1,000 fine if convicted.

Officials said fixing the section of Cary Parkway between Lake Pine Drive and Two Creeks Road will cost about a half million dollars.

Westbound drivers have been detoured using Kildaire Farm Road to Tryon Road to Lake Pine Drive.

Police said they're still seeking more information in the case. You can contact the Town of Cary Police Department at (919) 469-4012 or Cary Crime Stoppers at (919) 226-2746.
