Vandals target Franklin County cemetery

FRANKLINTON, N.C.

Police say angels, figurines and trinkets have been found broken in trash cans and they think juveniles are responsible.

Widower Tom Hayes tied rope around a bundle of flowers and secured them to a bench. It's all he can do to try and keep offerings near his wife's grave, after seeing another item vanish.

"I don't understand it. I really don't," Hayes said. "I was taught you just don't mess with dead people and graves and all."

Surveillance cameras were installed Wednesday and the police chief has authorized overtime for officers to patrol the town-owned property. Authorities said officers will be doing random patrols.

No one is allowed on cemetery grounds from dusk to dawn without written permission.
