Family of Smithfield shooting victim speaks

SMITHFIELD, N.C.

Family members told ABC11 that Lucas Benton was the person murdered.

Benton's family said on Saturday he was supposed to be taking family portraits with his fiancée and six children. Instead his family held onto a picture of Benton to remember the man they loved.

"To be cut down that quick that way so soon that his kids would only have a smidgen of memory of him," Benton's aunt Lisa Smith said.

His fiancée told ABC11 the children still don't know what happened to their father.

Benton's family says the 32 year old was friendly with his killer.

"This man didn't mess up his life, his family. He got ours," Smith said.

Johnston County deputies arrived at the home where the double shooting took place Friday afternoon. They found one man lying dead behind a car and another man, who the office is not naming, in the back of his trailer with a weapon by his side.

The sheriff's office would not say how many times the person murdered was shot.

Benton's family said they are in the process of making funeral arrangements.
