The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration declared Johnny Allen Spell an "imminent hazard to public safety" Friday.
The declaration stops Spell from operating any commercial vehicles.
"Safety is our highest priority," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "Unsafe truck drivers who endanger children and other members of the public have no business on our nation's roads."
Authorities said Spell passed a stopped school bus on Tuesday and hit and killed Alyiah Morgan as she was crossing U.S. Highway 421 in Sampson County.
They said Spell did not stop following the accident and he and the truck were found two hours later near Roseboro.
Spell remains in jail. He's charged with DWI and involuntary manslaughter.
