Officials say although it may sound weird to speed things up on the freeway, you have to slow things down on the entrance ramps. It can work in heavy traffic.
Traffic engineers say one of things that cause traffic to slow are clumps of cars trying to merge from on-ramps. So their idea is to put stop signals on those ramps to regulate the flow of traffic onto the freeways.
It's been tried in other areas of the country and now a North Carolina DOT expert says we might want to try it here.
Right now, this is all just a proposal for about a dozen or so on-ramps around on local freeways like the one at Lake Boone Trail and the beltline.
Experts say when it comes to using the devices in North Carolina; the question isn't if but when.
