The victim started going to people's doors asking for help. ABC11 spoke with one woman who received that knock outside her apartment.

"He was screaming," said eyewitness Rhonda Anderson.

Police said 20-year-old Jaaron Craig Fields, was shot in the torso. Police think it was not a random act and that he was targeted.

"I saw a trail of blood or something," said Anderson.

The shooting happened shortly before 2:30 p.m. and the area was quickly blocked off. Some residents were unable to get into their homes and access their cars.

"I thought it wasn't real because you like never see cops around here," said eyewitness Josue Rodriguez.

Officers went door to door searching for the gunman and as Chopper 11 HD flew over.

Investigators gathered by a taped off gazebo near a children's playground, where it appeared the shooting happened.

"I'm shocked it happened right there," said Rodriguez. "Normally, it's usually kids and I don't think parents are going to want to send their kids outside anymore because now that you see someone gets shot, you might think that it might happen again."

Two nearby schools were placed on lockdown. A code yellow was issued at the Wake Tech North Campus and the Riverbend Elementary School. It was done as a precaution as police investigated the shooting.

Police say Fields' injuries are non-life threatening. He was last listed in good condition.

At last report, no one was in custody. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
