Two charged in Wilson fatal hit and run

WILSON, N.C.

It happened just after midnight Friday morning in the 5000 block of Highway 42 east. Investigators said 58-year-old Hugh Johnson was hit while riding a motorized scooter.

Johnson's family is devastated by his death.

"I keep expecting him to walk in the door any second, and he doesn't and it's just killing me," said fiancé Lynn Barnes.

The two were hoping to be married this fall.

"I feel numb. I feel numb. It's like everything is in limbo right now," said Barnes.

After finding pieces of the car that hit Johnson at the crash site, investigators were able to determine the make and model of the vehicle.

Troopers have charged 39-year-old Troy Demonte Gunter of Walnut St., Wilson with felony hit and run involving serious injury or death, involuntary manslaughter and driving while license revoked. His bond was set at $30,000.

Nicole Owens Gunter, 34, of the same address, is charged with hit-and-run, aiding and abetting and aiding, and abetting driving while license revoked.

Her bond was set at $10,000.

Johnson's funeral is set for Tuesday.
