The system is called Divvy to reflect the nature of bike sharing.
On a Divvy map, the red dots show the location of 75 Divvy docks to be ready for use starting in June. The blue dots indicate the 300 additional docks to be installed by the end of August and another 400 over the next year.
"We have worked to ensure every Chicagoan has access to multiple transportation options, and Divvy will soon be another option to complement Chicago's public transit system," Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel was quoted in a city news release. "Divvy bikes will provide Chicagoans and visitors with more options for getting around our neighborhoods, commuting to and from meetings, and opening up new parts of the city to tourists."
The website DivvyBikes.com was scheduled to open for registration at 12 p.m.
Divvy will offer two tiers of annual memberships, according to the release, which also indicated the first 4,000 registrants will become "Founding Members" and will receive a distinctive key fob and additional benefits, including the chance to participate in the system launch event on Friday, June 14.
Gabe Klein, commissioner of the Department of Transportation, says offering different founding membership levels is a way for riders to show support and encourage others to use the system.
According to the release:
"Pedal" Founding Membership costs $75 and includes annual membership for unlimited trips up to 30 minutes and a limited edition "Founding Member" black key. Regular members keys will be "Divvy" blue.
The "Gear" Founding Membership wil cost $125. It includes annual membership for unlimited trips up to 30 minutes , a limited edition "Founding Member" black key, five, 24-Hour passes to share with friends and family, a black Divvy t-shirt in any size and entrance into lottery to participate in official launch at the Bike to Work Week Rally June 14.
