According to his lawyer, 40-year-old Shon McClain, of Apex, is at WakeMed, where doctors are assessing his brain activity.
The Wake County Sheriff's Office runs the detention center and said there was a fight between a detention officer and McClain on June 4. Officials said both men were injured in the altercation.
The officer has been identified as Markeith Council. He is on paid administrative duty, pending a review by the SBI.
