Several people were injured in a car accident in Johnston County while returning home from the beach.

Seven teens were driving westbound on I-40 coming back from the beach when the driver ran off the road, hit guardrail, overcorrected, and flipped the car twice before landing in the eastbound lanes of the highway, according to troopers.

Officials said 21-year-old Daquan Steward, of Clayton was seriously injured and taken to WakeMed. Four others were also injured and taken to the hospital. Two of those were 16-year-old Mallory Vann and 20-year-old Tramall Mitchell, both of Clayton. The two others were riding in the cargo area and their names have not been released.

Troopers said that while it is not advised, passengers are legally allowed to use cargo area for seating when seatbelts run out.

The driver, 18-year-old Tyler Strickland, of Garner was charged with reckless driving. He and another passenger were treated at the scene.

Officials said speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash.
