Fayetteville Police said 23-year-old Shayla Cole was driving her 2004 Jeep Cherokee east down Shaw Mill Road towards Rosehill Road when it crossed the center line and struck a 1999 Volkswagen and continued into oncoming traffic.

A 2007 Saturn going west on Shaw Mill Road towards Murchison Road spotted the Jeep and attempted to avoid the SUV, but the Jeep ended up colliding with the Saturn at an angle that caused it to overturn onto the vehicle.

Cole died at the scene.

Two people inside the Saturn, 30-year-old Kennard Ruffin and 28-year-old Marcel Roman Gist were airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill in critical condition. Gist, who was a passenger in the vehicle, later died at the hospital, according to authorities. Ruffin, who was driving, is still listed in critical condition.

A third person who was also riding in the Saturn, 22-year-old Devin Dixon, was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Three people inside the Volkswagen -- 22-year-old Markisha Pittman, 38-year-old Jerry Telusma and a 3 year old -- were also taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities have not said what caused the accident. The incident is still under investigation.

Shaw Mill Road from Murchison Road to Rosehill Road was shut down for several hours as authorities worked to clear the scene.
