Wake County man pleads guilty in wife murder

RALEIGH

Sonny Howard, 42, was sentenced to 13 years in prison.

In May 2012, Howard was stopped while driving his pickup truck through Virginia with his wife Sherry's body in the bed of the truck.

Howard had been charged with first-degree murder in the 50-year-old woman's death.

According to search warrants, deputies first learned of the woman's death after neighbors of the couple on Creedmoor Road reported seeing Howard loading what appeared to be a body into the truck.

Howard was stopped by Virginia authorities after a lookout was posted from Wake County.

Warrants said Howard admitted to the murder when he was captured.

During a court hearing Friday, the couple's only child begged the judge to have mercy on his father.

Investigators said the couple had a history of domestic problems.
