Garner, Smithfield move Independence Day celebration

Town of Garner officials said Tuesday they are taking no chances with the weather and are moving the annual Independence Day celebration from Wednesday to Friday.

Join the Town of Garner and the North Carolina Symphony Brass Quintet on July 5 at Lake Benson Park for Garner's annual Independence Day celebration. Gates open at 5 p.m.

The annual Smithfield 4th of July fireworks celebration has also been postponed due to rainy weather anticipated for Wednesday evening. Original plans were for the festivities to be held starting at 6 p.m. at the corner of Third and Johnston Streets.

The event has been rescheduled until Sunday, July 7.

A section of South Third Street will be closed off to traffic at 3 p.m. Sunday.  The Main Event Band will perform from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m.
