Wake County manager to retire

RALEIGH

As county manager, Cooke oversaw a $980 million budget, 3,800 employees, and all county services.

Wake County Commission Chairman Joe Bryan said Cooke navigated Wake County through difficult budget deficits and cuts, and had the foresight to put the county in a great position to move forward now as the county continues to grow.

"Coming out of this economic climate we've been in, there's a lot of pent up demand and everybody's got their hands out and they're going to want more resources even though there's still limited resources," said Bryan.

Bryan says the county will start looking for a new county manager right away. He expects it to take four to six months.
