It happened around 3 a.m. in the 4200 block of N.C. Highway 55 West.
Troopers say 22-year-old Matthew Tucker, of Raleigh, died and his passenger, Adam Ambrosetti, is being treated at WakeMed.
They say Tucker, who was driving a Ford Taurus, took a curve too fast, ran off the road, overcorrected, hit a tree, and flipped over.
Ambrosetti was thrown from the car, and Tucker was partially ejected.
Troopers say speed was a factor in the crash.
