Prosecutors allege Christopher Todd Rochelle and Samuel Gideon Christopher are responsible for killing 20-year-old Eleazar Herrera, who they say stopped to help at the scene of a car wreck on New Hope Road in January 2012 when a fight broke out and he was stabbed. Herrera later died at a local hospital.
The district attorney says Herrera was "in the wrong place at the wrong time."
Now, for the first time, the defense is getting their chance to tell their side of the story of what happened the night Herrera died.
In opening statements, the district attorney said that Herrera was just stopping by to help two people after he saw a car accident, and never thought that moments later his life would end.
The defense, however, disagrees. They say Herrera had been drinking and got into a fight with Gideon and Rochelle, and that the victim was actually the aggressor.
Family and friends of the victim strongly disagree.
The trial is expected to potentially last two weeks.
Rochelle is being tried separately.
