Duke Energy takes to airwaves to warn about scam

DURHAM

The scam begins when a customer gets a phone call from someone claiming to be a Duke representative.

Duke Energy has been warning customers about the calls. They say it's a call you want to hang up on because the scammer wants your money. The company has just launched a radio ad also letting people know about this scam.

It starts with an unsolicited phone call. The caller claims to be with Duke Energy and says they are about to disconnect your power if you don't pay up. They will tell you to go buy a pre-paid debit card and call them back to pay the bill if you want to keep your power on.

However, it is all a scam, and Duke Energy says the thieves are not slowing down and continue to rip customers off.

Remember, do not respond to these types of calls, and just hang up.  A rep with Duke Energy says they will never demand payment with a pre-paid debt card, which is the biggest red flag when it comes to this scam.
