Sixteen-year-old David Griffith took on building the War On Terror memorial as part of his Eagle Scout project, but the build hits close to home. Griffith's brother Sam died while fighting in Afghanistan in 2011.
The memorial Griffith is building will go inside Veterans Park in Holly Springs. His drawings show plans for a pentagon memorial made out of bricks and marble, as well as a piece of steel donated from the World Trade Center.
On Saturday, Griffith and the scouts took the pentagon outline of steel to Veterans Park.
Griffith has currently reached 25 percent of the $30,000 needed to finish the venture. When he reaches 50 percent, he will be able to place the order for the marble.
The foundation is part of the Eagle Scout project, but the rest is his personal venture. To raise money, Griffith plans to sell 1,000 personalized bricks.
