School board discusses class size limits

RALEIGH

The State Board of Education discussed changes that include eliminating class-size limits for fourth-graders and above. Kindergarten through third-grade classrooms are supposed to have no more than 21 students, but the re-written law allows up to 24 students in those early grades for the first two months of the year.

The law says it's the duty of local school boards to make sure class sizes stay within limits. The state school board no longer can add positions at crowded schools.
