Pedestrian hit on I-40

CARY, N.C.

It happened Thursday around 9 p.m. in the westbound lanes.

Investigators said the driver of a vehicle - identified as 29-year-old Warren Woods of Raleigh - ran out of gas and was walking down the shoulder carrying a gas can while wearing dark clothing.

Then, a car with visitors from California who were lost pulled onto the shoulder in an attempt look for directions. Their car hit Woods at about 45 miles per hour.

Woods was taken to the hospital with injuries that were called non life threatening.
