The accusation comes after medical tests at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center showed the child with a broken rib and head injury that doctors said were not accidental.
The boy has been transferred to Duke for treatment.
Nathaniel Pascarella, 26, of Masters Drive, Hope Mills, is charged with felony child abuse and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.
Bond was set at $150,000.
