Durham police search for cigarette bandits

DURHAM, N.C.

Police said there have been five reported burglaries at the grocery stores since March, and cigarettes were taken in four of those incidents. The suspects tried to take cigarettes in the fifth burglary, but were unable to get into a secured area and fled without taking anything.

The latest incident happened at the Food Lion on T.W. Alexander Drive on Thursday just after 3 a.m. Police said two people broke into the store and filled large trash cans with cartons of cigarettes.

Similar burglaries have been reported in nearby cities, including Raleigh and Garner.

In most cases, the suspects wore hoodies and bandanas and hit stores during the early morning hours. They have been seen driving gold and dark-colored SUVs.

Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at (919) 683-1200.
