3 Triangle highways to see speed limit increase to 70 mph

RALEIGH

The current 65 mph limit will go to 70 mph on the following highways:

  • Interstate 540 between Glenwood Avenue (U.S. 70) and I-40
  • All of N.C. Highway 540, including the Triangle Expressway
  • N.C. Highway 147 between N.C. Highway 540 and I-40

A news release on the subject said, "NCDOT conducted a traffic study of these sections of divided highway, reviewed current speeds, crash data and road characteristics such as lane and shoulder widths to ensure the highways will remain safe for travel at the higher speed."

"These roads are among our safest highways and we expect that they will continue to be," said State Traffic Engineer Kevin Lacy.

A similar increase went into effect last February for the other section of I-540 between Glenwood Avenue and U.S. 64/264.

A contractor is expected to start installing the new speed limit signs this week.
