At the start of school, there's bound to be some problems with busing. However, by the end of the third week when this family still didn't have a bus stop they were fed up.
Megan Stevens used to get dropped off after school each day at Leesville and Farmridge Roads. While many Wake County buses pass what used to be her bus stop, she says she was told by the bus driver on the first day of school that the bus no longer stops there.
"She was like you can't and I was like there is no reason why I can't ride the bus and get off," said Megan.
The bus driver did take Megan home on the first day.
"They let her get on the first day because she remembered her from last year," said Megan's mother Karen Stevens. "The next day, she tried to get on again, and she said 'No, it's not on our list. We can't take you home at all. You can't even get on the bus.'"
Karen had to leave work early and go pick Megan up at school. She then says she called the Wake County Schools' Transportation Office.
"They said, 'Yes, we know. We're processing it. It will be ten days. You'll just have to figure out how to get her home or where she can get off at the closest stop which is a half a mile down Leesville Road on the other side of street, which is a four lane road with is a lot of traffic. So, that's not possible.'"
After ten days, there were still no answers as to why the bus stop that Megan, along with the other kids in the neighborhood, has been using for the last couple of years is now all of a sudden no longer a stop.
"It's really frustrating. We can't talk to anybody at the transportation office. We get the front line people who just read us a script or aren't listening to what we are saying," said Karen. "We ask to speak to supervisor or manager. They won't talk to us."
Megan is frustrated too.
"I just want my bus stop back," she said. "I want to be able to get home from school every day."
I reached out to Wake County and within days Leesville and Farmridge was again a bus stop and Megan, along with the others on her street, can now ride the bus to and from school.
While a rep with Wake County said they would look into it, no one got back to me for comment.
