Dad makes surprise military homecoming at UNC game

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.

In the video, 7-year-old Matthew says he misses his dad playing with him. His 5-year-old sister Reagan says she doesn't want dad to miss her birthday anymore. The oldest, 15-year-old Breanna, misses the deep moments and conversations with her father, while 3-year-old Matthew misses the jokes.

Their dad, Personnel Specialist 1st Class Sharn Ziglar, is currently in his 20th year serving the United States Navy. He is currently aboard the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman and will retire from the military in December.

Or so his children thought.

At the UNC football game Saturday the video the children made played on the scoreboard after the first quarter. As the family looked on, their father appeared on the screen and later on the field.

Dad was home early, and this time for good.

This is the first time in years that the Ziglars will all be together. The family moved to North Carolina seven years ago after receiving military orders to Fort Bragg. Once PS1 Ziglar's orders were up, he was forced to return to Virginia. Because he was immediately being deployed, the family chose to stay here.

For the last four years, the family has lived apart. When he was in the states, dad drove back and forth from Virginia to his family here in Fuquay-Varina on the weekends. He missed games, practices, school plays, and quality time with his family.

Mom Ty Ziglar says through it all, her children have been strong and remained focused and diligent. The parents told their kids that this was just a season.

Now, their season is over.

In the video, Malcom thanks his dad for serving our country. And PS1 Ziglar, we thank you too. Welcome home.
