Vice President Joe Biden campaigns for Sen. Kay Hagan in Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.

Biden was in Chapel Hill to help raise campaign cash for Sen. Kay Hagan, who is running for re-election next year. The fundraising event was held at the Carolina Club.

Biden's speech was about the importance of centrist politics and politicians.

Somewhat ironically, Republicans came out swinging. They used the fundraiser to hammer Hagan, the Obama administration, and the Affordable Care Act.

"I think he reminds us all about the importance of the middle class in the United States," said UNC economics professor Buck Goldstein.

Goldstein was one of about 200 people, he said, who were at the fundraiser. Tickets went from $500 to $10,000.

Supporters, including Goldstein, clearly liked what they heard, both from Biden and Hagan.

"She's about as middle of the road as you can get and I think someone who can reach across the aisle and I think what we all need are people who can reach across the aisle," said Goldstein.

That does not sound the Hagan that Republicans have been hammering lately. They paint the state's junior senator in lock-step with the Obama administration, and used Friday's fundraiser to make that point.

The Republican National Committee put out a statement which read, "It should come as no surprise that after voting for the Obamacare train wreck and with the Obama administration 96 percent of the time, Kay Hagan is being rewarded with a fundraiser.  But after promising North Carolinians they could keep their insurance under Obamacare, she voted to put their plans on the chopping block and now nearly 500,000 are receiving cancellation notices.  Kay Hagan should answer why she places a higher premium on her loyalty to President Obama than being honest with the people she is supposed to represent."

Goldstein said the Affordable Care Act did not come up during Friday's fundraiser.

An event with Biden was canceled last month in Durham during the government shutdown.

Hagan is seeking a second term.
