A skull and bones were found by a person walking along railroad tracks in the area of Winslow Street and Southern Avenue.
Police said they returned to the area Wednesday morning and found more remains.
The skull and bones have been sent to the state medical examiner's office in Raleigh for identification.
No clothing was found and police said they were not able to determine the age, sex, or race of the person without the help of medical experts. They hoped to get more information in about a week.
They were also trying to match up the find with known missing person reports.
