Demand is up as more people are asking for assistance from gifts to even food. Sadly, officials say they just don't have enough toys to give out this year.
It's the boxes that still lie empty just days away from the Christmas holiday that break Sylvia Wiggins' heart.
"This year, we've had a 30 percent increase asking for help, said Wiggins, who is the director of the Helping Hand Mission. "For the last three weeks, we've been scrambling to help some families in need."
They are trying to help countless families no matter what.
"The mission helps families in need and, while we're helping them get on their feet, we make sure their child doesn't suffer," said Wiggins.
This Christmas, Wiggins said, while they may have toys for the little ones covered, they don't for their older children. With the need growing it seems every year, Wiggins says they are struggling to help out not only with toys, but food as well.
"Right now, we have so many empty boxes," said Wiggins. "We just don't have the item to put in it. Everybody needs something on Christmas morning. People just want love and to feel like someone cares about them."
