Man arrested in police standoff in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE

WSOC-TV in Charlotte reports that police arrested a man after he was holed up inside the Polk Building near Trade and Graham streets in uptown.

It all started around 1 a.m. , when police said a woman reported her vehicle was stolen at gunpoint in the 2100 block of Diamond Creek Circle in the Steele Creek area.

Metro Division officers later spotted a vehicle that matched the description and attempted to stop it, but the driver kept going.

Following a brief pursuit, the vehicle hit a building at the intersection of Trade and Graham streets.

It appeared two people in the car then got out and ran into the multistory building, according to police. Officers then began negotiations. Bomb squad detectives were also brought to the scene.

According to WSOC, police took one of the suspects away in handcuffs a short time later and searched the building to make sure no one else was inside.

Several streets were blocked off in uptown as authorities worked to clear the scene.
