Apex mayor resigns after 18 years in office

APEX, N.C.

The North Carolina's Department of Transportation said Wednesday Weatherly is its new deputy secretary for legislative affairs and policy.

He has been mayor for 18 years, and says it's been a good run.

Weatherly has seen the Wake County town grow from 7,000 to 42,000 residents.

His last day is Friday.

While mayor he worked full-time for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency and most recently in the office of House Speaker Pro Tempore Paul Stam. Weatherly will work with the General Assembly in his new job.
