Apex police have smart phone app for crime reporting

The Apex Police Department says it's trying a new way of fighting crime with an app for smart phones.

The apps available for iPhone and Android allow people to send in crime tips anonymously.

Police said they're looking for information on drug activity, information on past crimes, location of stolen property, and cold cases.

Officials said people can still send anonymous tips by texting TIP411 and using keyword "APEXPD".

Both methods are anonymous and the tips are sent directly to the Police Department. The systems allow detectives to ask follow-up questions to tipsters, who remain anonymous.
