The highway was reopened just after 9:30 p.m.

One person died. The woman was identified as 83-year-old Catherine Obie, of Durham. Friends and family said she was on her way home from the Deliverance Cathedral of Love Church in southeast Raleigh when she was killed.

Investigators said the crash was caused by an eastbound vehicle that crossed over the median into oncoming traffic.

Traffic investigators have charged 22-year-old Brandon Lewis Jefferson of New Jersey with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

An eyewitness told ABC11 that Jefferson's car hit the cable barrier system in the median and started flipping. The man said Jefferson's car passed over the roof of his vehicle before hitting the car that Obie was in.

He reported Obie died at the scene.
