Cumberland County jail expands in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.

Now with a new expansion that opened Monday, there are now an additional 316 beds, bringing the total to 884.

Until now, overcrowding had inmates on the floor in makeshift beds, and the chief jailer says there have been some serious social issues to deal with.

"It's been a challenge to make sure co-defendants aren't housed with one another or that maybe a victim of a family member who may be incarcerated as well, making sure they're not housed together," said Major Larry Trotter.

100 inmates will be transferred to the new section right away.
