Grandmother killed, boy injured in Durham stabbing

DURHAM

Around 5 a.m. Wednesday, authorities were called to an apartment in the 3400 block of Glasson Street, just off of Morreene Road about a "cardiac arrest," but when officers arrived, they found 62-year-old Carolyn Hemingway stabbed to death.

Her 4-year-old grandson was also seriously injured and rushed to Duke University Hospital.

Police later arrested the boy's brother, 17-year-old Treyvon Evans, and charged him with murder and attempted murder. He is currently being held without bond.

Authorities said the incident stemmed from an argument at the apartment the three shared.

Hemingway's brother -in-law, Gregory Jones, says she recently became a widow, losing her husband just a few months ago.

"She was a very nice person trying to do the best she can to keep her grandkids happy and everyone else happy," said Jones. "It's rough."

A neighbor told ABC11 that the 4-year-old boy was staying at the apartment with Hemingway, because his mother was in the hospital with some type of illness.

Evans' infant sister was unharmed.

His brother is in the intensive care unit. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Evans will make his first court appearance Thursday.

Durham County Public Schools confirmed to ABC11 that Evans was a student at Riverside High School as recently at December, but currently is not enrolled.
