Fayetteville investigates arson at MLK memorial

FAYETTEVILLE

The first fire was discovered Sunday just after 10 a.m. at the front door of the Law offices of Lila Washington and Marshal Pitts located at 117 Person Street.

A second fire was set at the base of the Martin Luther King Memorial located at Washington Dr. and Blue Streets at 6:15pm.

Investigators said it appears flammable liquid was used in both incidents. There was no serious damage reported.

A suspect, 47-year-old Mark Elliott Freeman, has been arrested and charged with burning of certain building, failure to heed to light or siren, and driving while license if revoked

Freeman is at the Cumberland County Detention Center on a $5000 secured bond.
