Store clerk shot to death at Henderson gas station

A 51-year-old store employee was gunned down at convenience store on Raleigh Road late Monday night.

Police are investigating the shooting death of a store clerk during a robbery at a gas station in Henderson.

It happened around 11 p.m. Monday at the Best Bet service station and convenience store in the 600 block of Raleigh Road.

Police said store clerk Ahmed Shahit, 55, of Henderson was found dead at the scene.

Detectives said two men came into the store demanding money and shot Shahit. A female employee was also inside the store during the robbery. She was unharmed.

It's unclear exactly what led up to the shooting, but it was all caught on camera. Surveillance video is now part of the ongoing investigation as police search for the two gunmen who also fled the scene with a cash register.

The store owner said Shahit was from Yemen and had worked here while his family remained overseas. Frequent customers and coworkers say Shahit he was friendly and kind. He was affectionately called "Hoppy."

There's a $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
