Authorities said it appeared the driver was speeding along East End Avenue when his Acura ran off the road, hit a tree, and split in to two before bursting into flames.

The driver of the car was somehow able to free himself from the wreckage, and ran into the woods where he was found by first responders a short time later.

He was taken by EMS to the hospital after suffering an injury to the right knee, two broken arms and facial wounds.

The driver, whose name has not been released, has been charged with driving while impaired, driving without a license, as well as careless and reckless driving.

The accident blocked East End Avenue from Highway 70 to Angier Avenue for about two hours, while authorities cleared the scene.
