A preliminary investigation shows three masked men forced their way into the home and shot 27-year-old Dominic Everett multiple times. His girlfriend and her two-year-old son were not hurt.

The robbers fled with some money.

"It was just scary and I don't feel safe. And it was unfair. He did not deserve to die that way...I just want him back," said Kelsey Dejesus, Everett's girlfriend.

Everett was declared dead at the scene. Authorities said he had lived at the home for about a month and may have been targeted.

"He got along with everyone. I don't know why anyone would want to kill him," Dejesus said.

Everett's criminal record reveals past convictions including breaking and entering and larceny. He was awaiting a court hearing on drug charges.

Deputies are currently searching for three black men who they believe are armed and dangerous. They are asking anyone with information to call the Granville County Sheriff's Office at (919) 693-3213.
