3 charged in murder of Staten Island deliveryman

STATEN ISLAND Police sources say the suspects claim the shooting was an accident during what they planned as a robbery.

The three allegedly planned to lure the driver to the street and then rob him. One of the shooter's accomplices placed the call to the Chinese restaurant, according to police.

Surveillance video shows the suspects approaching the deliveryman. When the deliveryman pushes the 16-year-old, the gun fires. The three then flee on foot.

The three teens, ages 16, 17, and 19 have prior arrests.

James Sanders,16, of Staten Island, who is the suspected shooter, is charged with murder in the second degree, along with attempted robbery charges and a weapon charge.

Otoniel Carty, 17, and Devin Hil, 19, both of Staten Island also were charged with murder in the second degree as well as attempted robbery charges. Carty faces a weapon charge.

Police say they have recovered the gun used in the crime and the cellphone.

The victim was identified as a 50-year-old Richard Salvia from Turnersville, N.J.

The delivery man had moved to Staten Island to live with the woman he loved.

Mary thought the best part of her life was just begining until the phone rang. "I thought it was an April Fools' joke," Mary exclusively told Jim Dolan.

His friends blame the restaurant. "They aren't supposed to send them over there...They know it's a dangerous neighborhood," said one person.

Mary thinks the restaurant knew too. "They claim they didn't, they said it was a new deliver," she said.
