Johnston County school employee charged with embezzlement

SMITHFIELD, N.C.

Kelly Jean Mills, 36, of Quince Court, Smithfield, an employee at Princeton Elementary School, was arrested Thursday by the Johnston County Sheriff's Office.

Between October 2013 and March 2014, Mills allegedly embezzled $2,610. [Originally, police had said it was $26,000 in error.]

According to Tammy Amaon, Public Information Officer with the JCSO, Mills was in charge of collecting money from students and teachers or other outside sources for field trips and other schools funds.

Mills was released from the Johnston County Jail on a $30,000 bond.

According to Tracey Peedin Jones, spokesperson for Johnston County Schools, Mills was hired in 1999 and most recently was the Head Secretary/Bookkeeper at Princeton Elementary.

Mills was suspended with pay following her arrest.
