School bus accident in Franklinton

Granville County school activity bus carrying athletes was involved in an accident at NC56 and Mitchell Avenue.

A Granville County school activity bus carrying athletes to an event in Franklin County was involved in an accident at N.C.Highway 56 and Mitchell Avenue in Franklinton Thursday afternoon.

School officials said 40 passengers were on the bus. That number included coaches and students.

Two students were taken by their parents to hospital to be checked out. One coach took himself to the hospital as a precaution.

Parents came and picked up the rest of the students.

The baseball game where the students were headed was canceled.

Pictures from Chopper 11 showed the bus with its hood torn off. A VW Bug with heavy damage was on a nearby wrecker truck.

Investigators said the VW driver failed to stop at a stop sign and was hit by the bus. The VW driver was taken to WakeMed with minor injuries.

The VW driver was cited for failure to yield.
