Highway Patrol, General Motors looking into fatal crash involving teacher

HARNETT COUNTY, N.C.

Neil Parnell, who was a teacher at South View High School, died in the crash in Harnett County on Friday afternoon.

The Highway Patrol told ABC11 that Parnell was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt. While troopers don't know yet if a mechanical issue is to blame, the trooper says the model is the subject of a General Motors recall.

The trooper says GM contacted him to offer any help in trying to confirm or deny any suspicions that the recall had anything to do with the crash.

The trooper told ABC11 that this is the first time a carmaker has contacted him about such an issue.

The trooper says the crash is still under investigation, and crews still plan to reconstruct the crash.
