Man rescued from 10 foot trench in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE

A man has been rescued in Fayetteville after getting trapped in a trench for hours Wednesday.

Around 10 a.m. two men were working to install a storm drain next to a Lowes store off Good Middling Drive near Raeford Road when it collapsed, the owner of Superior-Lot Clearing out of Vance County told ABC11.

James Averitt said one of the workers, a 56-year-old heavy equipment operator, got buried waist deep in the 10 foot trench.

Averitt said he has never seen anything like this happen in his 37 years of business.

Two rescue units, along with the Hazardous Materials Team, and Fayetteville authorities worked for hours to rescue the man. Around 12:30 p.m., they were able to free him.

The unidentified man was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in unknown condition.

The incident is currently under investigation.
