BENSON, North Carolina (WTVD) -- The State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash in Benson.

It happened just before midnight Sunday night in the 900 block of Morgan Road.

Authorities tell ABC11 that a 1993 Oldsmobile was going south at a high speed when the driver crossed the center line, hit a highway sign, and then plowed into a utility pole.

The driver, 56-year-old Terry Marcus Ennis of Benson, was taken to WakeMed, but died on the way to the hospital.

Authorities said Ennis was not wearing a seatbelt. He was the only person in the car.
