Durham County workers help man in need
DURHAM, North Carolina (WTVD) -- Quick action by two Durham County workers helped a man in need, and it was all captured on cell phone video.
A man in a wheelchair tried to cross a busy Highway 55 in Durham Tuesday. While crossing, the oncoming traffic light just turned green. Darius Allen and Willie Collins, both Durham County workers for the General Services Department, were sitting in their county truck when they spotted the man struggling to push his wheelchair across the street.
Fearing the man would get hit by a car, Darius pulled the truck into the intersection to block traffic. He then jumped out of the truck to help the man cross the highway.
Meanwhile, Willie went from the passenger seat to behind the wheel. Once Darius pushed the man safely across the highway, Willie moved the county truck out of the way. Darius says he didn't think twice when it came time to help.
"My supervisor Brian always says safety, something in my ear said Brian, safety, so I jumped out, the guy's not safe. I wanted to help the citizens, and I just did what I had to do," Darius added.
After seeing the good deed captured on video, one ABC11 viewer reached out and wanted to buy the two county workers lunch.
She said she got teary-eyed watching the good deed and she was moved how they jumped in and helped a man in need. Darius says he appreciates the offer, but it's not necessary as he just wanted to help the man.
